Texas CE Requirements for License Renewal

Texas.jpegAs a nurse in the state of Texas, you are required to earn continuing education to renew your active license.

Renewal Requirements

RN

  • Every two years
    • 20 hours of continuing education in area of practice
    • 2 contact hours related to geriatric care for those who work with older adults
    • human trafficking prevention course for any nurse who provides direct patient care
  • One-time requirement
    • 2 hours related to forensic evidence collection for those who work in an emergency room setting
  • Every six years
    • 2 hours related to nursing jurisprudence and nursing ethics

LPN

  • Every two years
    • 20 hours of continuing education in area of practice
    • 2 contact hours related to geriatric care for those who work with older adults
    • human trafficking prevention course for any nurse who provides direct patient care
  • One-time requirement
    • 2 hours related to forensic evidence collection for those who work in an emergency room setting
  • Every six years
    • 2 hours related to nursing jurisprudence and nursing ethics

Advanced Practice

  • Every two years
    • 20 hours of continuing education in area of practice
    • 2 contact hours related to geriatric care for those who work with older adults
    • 5 hours in pharmacotherapeutics for APRN with prescriptive authority
    • human trafficking prevention course for those who provides direct patient care
    • *Any APRN whose practice includes the treatment of tick-borne diseases is encouraged to participate in continuing education relating to the treatment of tick-borne diseases
  • One-time requirement
    • 2 hours related to forensic evidence collection for those who work in an emergency room setting
    • 2 hours annually (4 hours every licensing period) related to approved procedures of prescribing and monitoring controlled substances for APRN licensed prior to September 1, 2020, and authorized to receive information from the Prescription Monitoring Program (must complete no later than September 1, 2021)
  • Every six years
    • 2 hours related to nursing jurisprudence and nursing ethics
  • Every year
    • 2 hour annually (4 hours every licensing period) regarding safe and effective pain management related to the prescription of opioids and other controlled substances for APRN who has entered into a prescriptive authority agreement authorizing the prescribing of opioids (applicable to licensure renewals on or after January 1, 2021)
    • 1 hour (2 hours ever licensing perioed) that meets the requirements set forth by the Texas Pharmacy Board covering best practices, alternative treatment options, and multi-modal approaches to pain management, for APRN whose practice includes the prescription of opioids (only applicable to licensure renewals that occur between September 1, 2019 - August 31, 2023)
